Notice of Dock Partial Closure - Keats Landing - Update

Work is underway to secure an engineer to complete the design work required for the major repairs necessary to reopen the Keats Landing dock for vehicle traffic. Once the designs are complete, the project will be tendered for construction. Construction is anticipated to begin in late summer (August) and may take up to two months. Until such time as construction is complete, for safety purposes, the dock will remain closed to vehicles. Background Information A major inspection (including underwater) of the Keats Landing dock was completed in fall of 2023. The engineering report received by SCRD staff following the inspection stated, "the facility has significant structural damage to two bearing piles along the approach. Both piles have significant internal cross section loss and are no longer considered structurally reliable." The recommendation received from the engineer was to close the dock for vehicle access. A budget had been previously approved to replace the float on Keats Landing dock, and fortunately, when that project was completed in December, it came in under budget. It is anticipated that the remaining funds will be sufficient to replace the bearing piles. The SCRD understands that the closure of the dock to vehicles has created an inconvenience however it must remain closed for safety reasons. The SCRD appreciates the community’s patience at this time as staff work to have the vital repairs completed. Construction updates will be provided when they are available.
