Tags:  2026 | News Release
Date Released: August 20, 2026

On behalf of Sunshine Coast Regional District staff and our Board, I want to express our support to the workers and their families who are affected by today’s announcement.

The mill at Port Mellon has been an integral part of our community for generations providing good jobs, supporting our families and businesses, and serving as a significant economic driver for the Sunshine Coast.

The employees and contractors are our neighbours, friends and community members, and we recognize that this closure will have a profound impact not only on them and their families, but on our entire community.

Our Board will work closely with our local government partners, shíshálh Nation, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw, the Province and the Federal Government to better understand the full implications of this closure for our region.

We acknowledge that this is a rapidly evolving situation, but we will also advocate for the supports and resources needed by those most directly affected and work together to help our community navigate this difficult time.
