The shíshálh Name

Pronunciation: p’ is like p, but with a throat catch. The first i sounds like the ee in English ‘meet’. The second and third i sounds like the a in English ‘mate’. k’ is like k, but with throat catch and farther back in mouth. The first two syllables have strong stress.

Description: The name p’ip’k’ilich was chosen by the shishalh Elders Language Group to recognize that Katherine Lake is home to an endangered Western Painted Turtle population.

Meaning: turtle. (Sechelt Dictionary, Page 494)
