Lifeguards

Lifeguards and swim instructors are essential to the Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) being able to offer public swimming times and lessons. As with many other local governments across Canada, the SCRD has experienced a shortage of qualified lifeguards and swim instructors which has impacted our ability to maintain service delivery in the region.

Lifeguards monitor pools to prevent drowning or injuries and administer first aid if required. While at times challenging, lifeguarding is a very rewarding job – and could be perfect for those who love the water.

Throughout the year, we offer courses you need to become a Lifeguard.

How to Become a Qualified Lifeguard

Qualified lifeguards complete the Lifesaving courses and programs offered by the Lifesaving Society.

Complete the courses below to become a qualified Lifeguard.
Summer 2026 courses are listed below. Fall courses will be viewable starting early August.

1:  Bronze Medallion – July 14 – 16
2:  Standard First Aid. July 21 – 23
3:  Bronze Cross. July 28 – 30
4:  National Lifeguarding Certification starts August 4

Lifeguard training is an investment in specialized skills which are in high demand. The starting wage for a lifeguard at the Sunshine Coast Regional District in 2026 is $27.98 per hour. If you are a high school student, Lifeguard Certification is worth two high school credits.

Sign up for our Swim Instructor Course and stand out as a confident, well-rounded aquatic professional! This course takes place August 23 – 28. Register by July 31.

If you enjoy working with people and love the idea of teaching swimming skills that can last a lifetime, this could be the perfect fit for you! Swim Instructors are responsible for teaching and evaluating candidates participating in the Swim for Life – Learn to Swim program. Course takes place August 23 – 28. Register by July 31.
Candidates in the Swim Instructor Course will learn about evaluation and techniques/approaches required for teaching. They will learn about long term and short-term planning, class management and safety supervision. Teach experience requirement included within the course.
