sḵwelawt

In 2017 shishalh Nation Elders Language group and the SCRD began a project to provide and/or translate SCRD park names into the shashishalhem (Sechelt language). Egmont Park is translated as sḵwelawt.

Pronunciation: kw is like k, but pronounced with rounded lips and further back in the mouth, as in the first sound of English ‘quote’. aw sounds like the ow in English ‘now’. Both syllables have strong stress.

The name sḵwelawt was chosen by the shishalh Elders Language Group because this is the shishalh name for the area.

Meaning: The meaning of this word is believed to reference a type of fern (possibly sword fern)
