Agriculture has been with us since the dawn of civilization. Farming domesticated plant and animal species resulted in food surpluses and other products needed to advance human civilization. Over time, agriculture has been largely shaped by climate, culture and technology. Before modern agriculture, our indigenous and settler ancestors thrived on harvested fish and seafood, and non-timber forest products. History suggests that the food capacity of our lands, ocean, rivers and forests through sustainable harvesting practices have the potential for substantially increasing our local food self sufficiency.

The Sunshine Coast has favourable conditions for agriculture. Soils generally have moderate agricultural capability, while South Coast weather is characterized as having mild, moist winters and warm, dry summers. Despite our mild weather and suitable soil conditions, currently only a fraction of the food consumed on the Sunshine Coast is grown and produced here.
