Climate and Energy

“In the face of a global climate emergency we must move swiftly to reduce GHG emissions and enhance our region’s resiliency to the effects of a changing climate” (SCRD 2019-2023 Strategic Plan).

The Sustainable Development Division is fostering a climate-conscious and climate-ready community by integrating climate change mitigation and resilience practices into all aspects of the SCRD’s operations.

Corporate-Wide

SCRD will lead by example and make corporate activities carbon neutral. A detailed plan to achieve carbon neutrality is under development. Additionally, the SCRD calculates it's greenhouse gas emissions and reports them to the Province. The 2021 emissions and Local Government Climate Action Program survey can be found here (and attestation form).

Community-Wide

The SCRD is undertaking a comprehensive and thoughtful approach to developing a Community Climate Plan. The plan will outline how the SCRD will foster a climate conscious and climate ready community. Visit letstalk.scrd.ca/climate to have your voice heard and see all reports, including Community Emissions Inventory, Climate Risk Assessment, and a Climate Science Report.

Past work:The Community Energy and Emissions Plan (CEEP 2009) aims to reduce energy use and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions throughout the community, through implementing a range of actions. It is based on a Community Energy and Emissions Inventory that was updated in 2012.
