1967-2017
Did you know that as the Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) was being formed in 1966, there were 8,290 people living on the Sunshine Coast from Port Mellon to Egmont? Today, 29,970 people call the SCRD home (2016 Census figure). This timeline highlights key SCRD milestones through the years.
To celebrate the SCRD's 50th anniversary, the SCRD Mapping Division is providing you with a glimpse of changing properties through time.
The SCRD was officially established through Letters Patent on January 4, 1967. For the first year, Directors were appointed for the rural areas, and Sechelt and Gibsons were asked to provide representatives to sit on the Board.
The following Directors were appointed to represent the electoral areas:
Electoral Area A: J. Dunlop
Electoral Area B: N. Watson (Chair)
Electoral Area C: E. A Prittie
Electoral Area D: J. C. Gilker
Electoral Area E: F. West
Electoral Area F: J. L. Wolverton
The following Directors were appointed to represent the municipalities:
Village of Sechelt: L.P. Hanson
Village of Gibsons Landing: F.O. Feeney
The SCRD held its first Board meeting on January 12, 1967. At this Board meeting, C.F. Gooding was appointed Secretary Treasurer. Mr. Gooding was paid $700 per month.
The first election for Directors was held on December 9, 1967.
The provincial objective in creating regional districts was to more efficiently and economically deliver services to unincorporated areas of the province on local, sub-regional and regional basis.
The first functions undertaken by the SCRD included regional and community planning, contracting services, local works and services, and solid waste disposal.
In 1986 the Sechelt Indian Band became a unique third level of government under the Sechelt Indian Band Self Government Act that largely replaced the Indian Act. A Sechelt Indian Government District representative joined the SCRD Board of Directors.
Each year, the SCRD goes through a financial planning process to prepare a financial plan legislatively required to be approved and adopted by the Board by March 31. The SCRD board approved the budget at its February 24, 1967 meeting under Annual Budget Bylaw No. 5.
