Strategic Directions Plan
Introduction:
The Board recognizes the need to develop a strategic plan to guide the direction of the organization and to consolidate the many elements of planning that are done independently, by different departments (e.g., recreational facilities and park development). It also acknowledges the importance of many initiatives; however, the Board decided that five key strategic directions required more attention at this time.
Vision:
The Sunshine Coast is a community of communities creating a sustainable way of life through a collaborative decision making process. We are committed to an enhanced natural context; local control over local resources; a vibrant economy; and an enriched cultural fabric.
The vision will be realized through
- Local control over resources and development
- Public awareness and involvement
- Responsive and effective government
- Quality recreational and cultural amenities
- Economic well being
- Healthy and diverse communities
Collaborative Leadership
The Board stressed that to achieve its goals for 2009 – 2011, it will model and facilitate collaborative leadership with all the local communities and local governments. The Board is committed to:
- working cooperatively in achieving its strategic directions
- operating with a collective vision that reflects the diversity of values of the various communities
- creating effective two way communication with all local governments and the community in both listening to their ideas and concerns as well as continuously sharing and consulting on what is being proposed or under consideration
- recognizing, listening and building upon the diverse assets and resources within the community
- being a learning organization which regularly examines the external and internal trends and emerging issues as well as learning from other communities and organizations
Strategic Priorities (2009/2011)
The Board has agreed to focus on five strategic priorities:
- Developing a Regional Long Term Sustainability Plan
Our goal is to create a regional long term sustainability plan for the Sunshine Coast that is supported by the community. The plan will describe how residents and businesses envision and plan for the long term well being of our area.
- Protecting Water, Aquifers and Watersheds
Our goal is to protect our water resources as population increases and as we address the impacts of climate change on present and future generations.
- Addressing Solid Waste Management
Our long term goal is to work towards achieving zero waste on the coast.
- Achieving Financial Sustainability
Our goal is to have financial sustainability so residents and businesses can continue to receive high quality service and provide a legacy for future generations.
- Developing a Regional Growth Strategy or Alternative
Our goal is to have a regional growth strategy or alternative so that communities are well planned and designed in a coordinated and effective manner to achieve social, economic and environmental goals.
