Regional Water Systems Overview

Our water systems supply potable water to approximately 23,000 residents between Langdale and Secret Cove from three different water systems that include surface water and groundwater sources. Bulk water supply is provided to the upper part of the Town of Gibsons and a small water system is operated in Earl’s Cove. These water supplies are also used for fire protection, industrial use and irrigation.

Chapman Creek Water System

The main source of supply is Chapman Creek which supplies water to approximately 90% of the residents. The other sources of supply are as follows:

• Ruby Lake – this supplies water for the Earl’s Cove system only
• Gray Creek (summer only) –supplies water to the Sandy Hook / Tuwanek area
• Chaster Well (summer only) - supplies water to the Gower Point area
• Soames Point Well – supplies the Soames Point area only
• Langdale Well - supplies the Langdale area only

Operations include the maintenance of the Chapman Creek Water Treatment Plant, the Chapman and Gray Creek Intakes, Water Pump Stations, chlorination stations, pressure reducing stations, reservoirs, fire hydrants, distribution mains and service connections.

The water distribution system consists of approximately 300 km (187 miles) of pipeline (varying in size from 50mm to 600mm), 13 storage reservoirs, 10 pump stations, 1000+ fire hydrants, 6 chlorination stations, and approximately 10,000 water service connections.

North Pender Water System

We assumed ownership and operation of the North Pender Harbour Water System in September, 2006 while consolidating Hotel Lake with the Garden Bay Waterworks District System. This system provides potable water to approximately 1200 full and part time residents in the Garden Bay, Irvine’s Landing, Daniel Point and Sakinaw Ridge areas. The sources of supply are from Hotel Lake and Garden Bay Lake. These water supplies are also used for fire protection, and irrigation.

Operations include the maintenance of the Garden Bay and Hotel Lake Intakes, Water Pump Stations, chlorination stations, pressure reducing stations, reservoirs, hydrants, distribution mains and service connections.

The water distribution system consists of approximately 25 km (15.5 miles) of pipeline (varying in size from 25mm to 200mm), 3 storage reservoirs, 3 pump stations, 84 fire hydrants, 2 chlorination stations, and approximately 550 water service connections.

South Pender Water System

Ownership and operation of the South Pender Harbour Water System was assumed as of January 31, 2008. This system provides potable water to approximately 2300 full and part time residents in the Madeira Park and Frances Peninsula areas of Pender Harbour. The source of supply is from McNeil Lake and the Water Intake is on Haslam Creek. This water supply is also used for fire protection, and irrigation.

Operations include the maintenance of the Haslam Creek Intake, Water Pump Stations, chlorination stations, pressure reducing stations, reservoirs, hydrants, distribution mains and service connections.

The water distribution system consists of approximately 32 km (20 miles) of pipeline (varying in size from 25mm to 250mm), 3 storage reservoirs, 2 pump stations, 61 fire hydrants, 2 chlorination stations, and approximately 925 water service connections.
