Water System Projects 2010
Every year the Sunshine Coast Regional District Waterworks Department undertakes a Capital Works Program to improve the Regional Water Systems throughout the Sunshine Coast. The following summarizes both completed and current projects for 2010.
Completed Projects:
Langdale Reservoir Replacement
The 227,300 litre wood stave reservoir in Langdale has been replaced with a 454,600 litre bolted steel reservoir. The new reservoir will provide more water storage for the Langdale area in addition to a more secure water storage facility.
Eastbourne Water System Upgrade
Upgrades to the water storage facility for the Eastbourne Water System located on Keats Island have been completed in order to meet increasing demand in the Eastbourne Community. The upgrade consisted of converting three raw water storage tanks to treated water storage tanks, which increased the storage capacity of treated water from 9600 gallons to 16,800 gallons.
Lane Rd Water Main Replacement
A new 250mm water main has been installed and is now in service from the Garden Bay Reservoir to Lane Road and Hotel Lake Rd. The mains replacement project will improve fire flows for the Hotel Lake and Garden lake areas.
Sinclair Bay Road Water Main Upgrade
A new 200mm water main has been installed on Sinclair Bay Road in Pender Harbor to replace the old water main which was aging and in need of replacement. The mains replacement project will improve fire flows for the Hotel Lake and Garden lake areas.
Current Projects:
Regional Water System
System Planning
The Comprehensive Regional Water Plan is currently being updated to include:
- A strategy for meeting the region’s water needs for the next 25 years;
- Improvements to the existing water systems and funding for these improvements; and
- A revision of water Development Cost Charges for the service area.
Emergency Response Plans for all Regional Water Systems are currently being updated, and/or developed.
A Source Assessment Response Plan for the Chapman Creek watershed is currently being developed to ensure adequate quantity and quality water supplies are readily available at all times.
A Bathymetric Survey for Edwards Lake is scheduled for the fall of 2010 in order to assist SCRD efforts for future water supply planning.
Mains replacement – Sunshine Coast Hwy – West Sechelt
The existing asbestos cement water main on the Sunshine Coast Hwy between McCourt Rd and Wakefield Road is scheduled to be replaced in the fall of 2010 because it is undersized and in poor condition. In addition, fire flows in this area will also be enhanced with the main replacement.
Reed Road Pump Station
The existing pump station on Payne Road will be replaced with a new pump station on Reed Road in order to replace again infrastructure and improve fire flows in Upper Gibsons. This project is funded by both the Sunshine Coast Regional District and the Town of Gibsons.
Egmont Water System
A new reservoir and water treatment system is scheduled to be constructed in Egmont, Pender Harbor during the fall of 2010. These new facilities will provide more water storage capacity and enhanced fire flows in addition to treated water for the residents of Egmont.
Grantham’s Landing Water System Upgrade
The existing water system for Grantham’s Landing is scheduled to be replaced with new 200mm water mains in late summer of 2010. This work is part of the SCRD 10 year plan, with support from Towns for Tomorrow Grant Program, to replace aging and smaller water lines and improve domestic flows and fire flows to the Grantham’s Landing area. Chapman Lake Control System
A computer controlled monitoring station is currently being developed at Chapman Lake to improve efficiency in regulating flow levels in Chapman Creek. This project will allow for water storage in Chapman Lake to efficiently supply water during dry seasons to the SCRD Reservoir while continuing to provide enough flows for wild fish stocks in Chapman Creek.
North Pender Harbor Water System
System Planning
A 10 Year Water Works Plan is currently being developed to include:
- Overall improvements to the water system;
- The development of a financial plan to fund improvements; and
- Establishing Development Cost Charges for the North Pender Harbor service area.
Emergency Response Plans for all North Pender Harbor Water Systems are currently being updated, and/or developed.
Oyster Bay Water Main Extension
The Oyster Bay water main extension is nearly complete. To date, new 200mm water mains have been installed on the North and South sides of Oyster Bay. The final phase in this project will be connecting the two new water mains via an ocean crossing with a 250mm water main in Oyster Bay. Upon completion, the Oyster Bay water main extension will be supplying water from the Garden Bay water system to improve water quality and fire flows in the area.
Ultra Violet System for the Garden Bay Pump Station
A UV system is currently being developed for the Garden Bay Pump Station to improve water quality for the area. To date, the preliminary designs have been completed.
South Pender Harbor Water System
System Planning
A 10 Year Water Works Plan is currently being developed to include:
- Overall improvements to the water system;
- The development of a financial plan to fund improvements; and
- Establishing Development Cost Charges for South Pender Harbor service area.
A Bathymetric Survey for Harris Lake is scheduled for late summer of 2010 in order to assist SCRD efforts for future water supply planning.
A Seismic Assessment of the McNeil Lake Dam is planned and will be completed in conjunction with the South Pender Harbor water treatment plant design.
Emergency Response Plans for all South Pender Harbor Water Systems are currently being updated, and/or developed.
South Pender Harbor Water Treatment Plant
Developing a new water treatment plant for South Pender Harbor is currently underway in order to improve water quality for the area. To date, preliminary plans and bench testing of raw water have been completed. This project will be funded through the Build Canada Fund and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities totaling approximately $4.5 million. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2011.

Water Main Markers:
If you’re hiking around the woods, you may come across one of our markers that indicate where a water main is underground. These markers are being installed wherever there is a possibility that someone may dig in the ground, and damage the water main.
