New Programs
Drowning is identified as the 3rd leading cause of death in Canada and the 2nd leading cause of death for children under the age of 10. Most people drown less than 15m from safety and over half of the incidents occur in the company of others. The PHAFC is offering two new programs to help promote the Water Smart message to both aquatic and non-aquatic groups.
Lifesaving for Backyard Pool Owners: This program will offer basic, low risk water rescue training to individuals who spend time around the water but may not know hot to swim or have weak swimming skills. The goal is to develop strategies for preventing residential pool drowing involving young children. It is a 4 hour program, one hour dry and 3 hours wet and includes a workbook.
Saturday May 12 1-5pm Activity #1400.280 $60
Lifesaving for the Lay Rescuers: This program will offer skills to people such as private pool owners and parents of small children who may not have a strong aquatic background. The course also includes a 3 hour first aid module.
Saturday June 1 9-4:30pm Activity #1404.280 $60
Program Descriptions:

Adult 50+ Beginner Swim Lessons: It's never too late to learn how to swim or overcome the fear of water. Swimming is a fantastic form of exercise for all abilities. Our qualifed Instructors will start you out right by teaching the basic swimming skills or you can work on the stroke that you want to learn.
Adlut 50+ Intermediate Swim Lessons: Has the beginner session left you wanting more or has it been years since you set foot in a pool? Improve your strokes with our qualified Instructors, choose the strokes you want to make more efficient and get back into swimming as part of your healthy lifestyle.

Jr. Lifeguard Club: Is an action packed, unique alternative for youth who love water. Participants in JLC will continue to develope strokes as well as lifesaving skills in a fun, team-based environment. Youths are encouraged to develope skills based on personal bests in swimming, lifesaving, fitness, knowledge, leadership and teamwork. The club provides high activity challenges in an energetic learning environment in the pool and on the deck. Youths in JLC also complete their introductory levels of becoming a lifeguard: Canadian Swim Patrol- Rookie/Ranger/Star. Participants need to be a minimum of Level 5 Swim Kids, able to swim 20 metres (the length of the pool) and tread water for two minutes.
