Ecosystems - Species at Risk

The SCRD Community Parks system encompasses habitat that does, or potentially, supports a wide range of species. Some of these species are designated “at risk”, such as Coho Salmon. Recognizing that the destruction of habitat is the number one threat to any species the Parks department designates and manages the majority of its park system as wild open spaces. When development is necessary, professionals’ are consulted and measures taken to limit its impact on sensitive habitat.

In addition the Parks Division is in the process of developing an umbrella Environmental Management Strategy which will guide the community parks maintenance and enhancements.

Environment Canada is seeking public comments on the most recent addition of species to the Federal Species at Risk Act (SARA) to inform the Federal Minister’s listing decision by March 20, 2009. Of the nine species proposed from British Columbia, only one has its range within the boundaries of the Sunshine Coast: the Olive-sided Flycatcher. This bird has been placed on the Threatened list.
