Solid Waste

Overview of the Department

As part of the Infrastructure Services Department and Sustainable Services Division, the Solid Waste Management Program provides solid waste management for the Sunshine Coast. This includes operation and maintenance of the Sechelt Landfill and Pender Harbour Landfill sites, monitoring of closed landfill sites in Gibsons and Halfmoon Bay, garbage collection services for residents living within designated garbage collection areas, operation of recycling facilities, and waste reduction planning and initiatives.

The Solid Waste Management Program reports to the Infrastructure Services Committee, who then make recommendations to the SCRD Board. Infrastructure Services Committee meetings are typically scheduled for the first Thursday of each month (except August) and held in the Board Room at the SCRD Main Office at 1975 Field Road. Committee meetings are open to the public.

Advisory Committee

The Solid Waste Plan Monitoring Advisory Committee (PMAC) is responsible for advising the SCRD on matters involving monitoring the implementation of the SCRD's Solid Waste Management Plan, and evaluating its effectiveness. The PMAC may also be requested to provide comments on pertinent solid waste issues referred by the SCRD Board. Minutes, reports and recommendations from the PMAC are directed to the Infrastructure Services Committee for consideration. The term of members on the PMAC is 2 years (interested members may apply for reselection at the end of a term).
